Small tree with an even, narrow pyramidal crown shape. Most striking, however, is the colour of the leaves. Especially juvenile foliage is deep red, later greenish red. The under surface of the leaves is dark green, darker than of the species. It is the combination of a good growth habit and the nice colour of the leaves which makes 'Red Shine' attractive to employ. The growth habit justifies the use in narrow streets and avenues, whereas the colour of the leaves can provide a striking “touch” to a design making a street look slightly different from the usual. It is advised to use plants that are grown on their own root ball to avoid (green leaved) root suckers. The plant forms a strongly branching main root with very many hair roots.
