This Snake Bark maple forms a large multi-stemmed shrub to a small tree to a maximum height of circa 10 m. The crown is oval to round with decorative overhanging branches. The twigs usually have a slightly more greenish hue and are a little lighter than those of A. davidii. Therefore the stripes are less prominent. The usually 3-lobed leaves may sometimes be almost without lobes. The margin of the leaf is doubly serrated. The flowers are monoecious; female and male flowers grow on one plant. The plant has a strongly branched and compact root system. As is to be expected from a subspecies this one differs little from the species A. davidii. A. davidii subspecies grosseri is an ornamental plant which can be applied well in gardens and narrow streets.
