Small tree with spreading branches and a vase-shaped crown. Height approx. 4 - 8 m. The smooth bark is brown, twigs are reddish-brown and have few lenticels. The elliptical leaves emerge brownish-red and turn dark green in the summer. The underside is somewhat bluish-green. The top is long and tapers to a point and the leaf edge is toothed to sometimes double serrated. Autumn colour yellow-orange. The tree produces a few single to double white flowers. They are grouped in threes to sevens in bundles. P. serrulata seldom fruits. It does not stand up to wet soil. This tree is grafted onto P. avium, mostly low down. P. serrulata is particularly popular in Japan and much praised for its wonderful flowers in the spring. Very many cultivars of P. serrulata are grown.
