Grows as a narrow (initially very narrow), columnar tree that only becomes somewhat broader later in life. The branches grow from the trunk at an angle of about 30°. The cultivar name refers to the Doric columns of ancient Greece. The leaf is a shiny dark green and feels rather leathery. In autumn it turns deep orange-red. With its very narrow crown, ‘Doric’ is highly suitable for use in more restricted spaces. Its growth will stagnate on calcareous soil. In such soil, as with very dry soil, the autumn change of colour will be less noticeable. Intolerant to (sea) wind.
