One of the first selections in Acer Rubrum made by Scanlon. ‘Gerling’ grows in a columnar pattern but later in life the crown droops slightly to form a narrow ovoid. The leaves are typical of the species. The autumn colour is orange and not very spectacular compared with the intense colours of other cultivars. However, the nicely narrow crown and regular growth pattern make it a very useful tree for avenues and streets. Its growth will stagnate on calcareous soil. In such soil, as with very dry soil, the autumn change of colour will be less noticeable. Intolerant to (sea) wind.
