Carpinus henryana is a species growing from a shrub form into a small tree. The tree grows relatively quickly but will only grow into a medium-sized tree over 10 m tall in exceptional cases. The crown is oval. The young twigs are a striking purple-brown and initially silky-hairy, later bald. The old bark is grey, smooth at first but later shallowly grooved lengthwise. The narrow leaves contribute to the fine texture exuded by this tree. The young leaves are slightly reddish-tinged, the mature summer leaves are dark green and slightly leathery to the touch. It is hairy only on the underside at the veins. Flowering with yellow-green catkins is not particularly conspicuous. Flowering is followed by pendulous fruiting catkins that are 6-7 cm long.
Carpinus henryana is virtually soil tolerant, although it needs sufficient food. In doing so, it tolerates both dry and wet soil well. Was first collected by Irish planthunter Augustine Henry in China and named after him. Hardiness zone: 6
