Very striking small to medium size tree, initially with a columnar crown that becomes a narrow oval after some years. The twigs and bark have the grey colour typical of the species. The leaf, however, is somewhat smaller and matt purplish brown. On emerging it is rather brighter and redder, but turns dark in the second half of summer. The leaves feel rather thick and leathery. Autumn colour somewhat orange-brown. As typical for the species, the falling leaf has a pleasantly spicy/cinnamon scent. Thrives in loose, preferably loamy soil. Poor tolerance to drought but thrives well in bright sunlight. The spring leaf is sensitive to night frosts. Was grown by Karl Fuchs from seeds he collected at the Exotenwald at Weinheim.
