Large, usually multi-stemmed, shrub to small tree. The central leaderes and trunk grow fairly steeply, forming the broad, vase-shaped crown. The nearly round leaves are a glossy dark green, turning bright yellow in autumn. They feel rather thick and leathery. The flowers often appear before the leaves develop. They are a splendid, deep purplish pink and stand in compact clusters. ‘Avondale’ blossoms profusely even when young and stays small for the species. This warmth-loving tree prefers a loamy or fertile, moist but not too wet, calcareous soil in full sun.
