Large shrub to small tree with a broad, vase-shaped to round crown. The round to kidney-shaped leaves are mid-green. The flowers appear in compact clusters just before the leaves develop. They are a deep purplish pink and noticeably larger than typical for the species. Blossoms very profusely even when young. The pods persist all winter. Was planted as a seedling in Bodnant Garden in 1876. Because the blossom was so striking, the Royal Horticultural Society awarded the tree a First Class Certificate in 1944, after which it acquired the cultivar name ‘Bodnant’. A warmth-loving tree that prefers a fertile, calcareous or loamy soil in full sun. Tolerates dry soil.
