This hawthorn grows from a large shrub to a tree with low branches. Because the branches hang down somewhat the tree forms a broad compact crown. Height 6 to 8 m. The bark is greyish-brown and flakes off in platelets. Young twigs are somewhat reddish and often bear sturdy thorns. The lobed, deeply incised leaves are dark green and turn yellow in the autumn. Flower umbels appear in May with single white and sweetly scented florets. Small dull red drupes follow in the autumn. Used as a park tree and in landscape settings: often also used in hedges. Should preferably be lightly pruned because of the ease with which suckers are formed. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
