Cryptomeria japonica 'Bandai' is an almost spherical to broadly pyramidal large shrub up to about 2 m high. It is slow-growing with twigs of different lengths. Bundles of shorter twigs grow on longer twigs. This makes it look as if "cramps" of twigs are constantly growing on the longer twigs. The scaly needles on the longer twigs are also clearly longer (about 1.5 cm) than the circa 3 mm long needles on the short twigs. The foliage is fresh dark green, turning more bluish-green to slightly bronze in winter.
It is an old cultivar imported from Japan in 1934 under the name 'Bandai-sugi'. Since sugi is simply the Japanese name of Cryptomeria, the name should simply be 'Bandai'. 'Bandai' is slightly less hardy than most other cultivars and should be protected during severe frosts. Hardiness zone: 6b
