Medium-size tree with an almost round to fan-shaped crown. The older bark is brownish grey and deeply grooved. The leaves are glossy dark green and can grow to over 15 cm, depending on the position and (micro)climate. Sometimes produces rather brownish yellow autumn colours, but these are hardly decorative. Because of their colour and the fact they are hidden between the leaves, the pale yellow, bell-shaped flowers are not very conspicuous. Female flowers produce large, edible berries called kaki or sharon fruit. These are orange and have four conspicuously triangular sepals on top. The fruits taste rather insipid and can be eaten on their own or in dishes. Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil, preferably loamy. Tolerates wind well, except cold, dry wind.
