Fagus sylvatica 'Cockleshell' is a medium-sized, narrow, upright growing tree with decorative leaves. These are almost entirely round, green and 1.5 - 4 cm across. The tree has a columnar crown of circa 15 m. The soft, smooth bark is grey. Inflorescence in small, inconspicuous flower catkins. These are followed by 10 - 20 mm large nutlets. The tree is used in parks and as a solitary. It thrives well in well-drained soil that is not too wet and rich in humus content. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
