Ginkgo biloba 'Mariken' is notable for its regular, flattened spherical crown and compact habit. Because of its crown shape, this cultivar needs to be grafted onto a (high) trunk. The final height therefore depends on the graft height. Later in life, the branches start to droop slightly. The young twigs are quite thick, which enhances the compact look of 'Mariken'. The leaves are relatively large and have the same fan shape characteristic of Ginkgo. In autumn, the green leaves turn yellow. Fine cultivar for more small-scale use in gardens and squares or in avenues of shopping centres, city squares, etc. 'Mariken' was found in the Kronenburgenpark in Nijmegen as a witches' broom by P. Theunissen from Beesel. P. Vergeldt from Lottum subsequently named and introduced the plant. The cultivar was named after Mariken van Nieumeghen (Nijmegen), protagonist in a 16th century miracle play set (partly) in Nijmegen.
