Large, broad shrub up to 5 m tall, with dense, rather tangled branches. The young twigs are grey-brown with soft hairs. The obovate to round leaf is matt green and bears soft hairs. In the autumn it turns yellow. The leaf measures 10 to 13 cm. The flowers grow in compact clusters of axillary racemes. The individual flowers measure up to about 4 cm and consist of 4 narrow, golden yellow petals and a brownish red calyx. They open from December and into January. Seeds were sent from China to Britain in 1879, but it took 20 years before the qualities of this species were discerned.
