Bay laurel is a well-known plant, not least because its aromatic leaves can be used in dishes. It is also a tree that has been associated with success and wealth for centuries, as evidenced by the laurel wreaths worn by Olympians on victory. Or in the proverb "rest on your laurels", where the laurel is mentioned.
Although common in the Mediterranean region, the tree is native to Asia Minor. It is a very regularly growing, cone-shaped tree, whose crown can reach up to 12 m in height. In the temperate north-western European climate of the lowlands, the tree never gets that, by the way. The evergreen leaves are narrowly ovate and leathery to the touch. When rubbed, but especially when bruised, the leaves emit a strong but typical scent that most people find very pleasant. The bundles of small, greenish-yellow flowers are not very conspicuous. They are followed by shiny black berries. The berries are not very conspicuous either, and the tree has to rely mainly on its regular crown shape and aromatic evergreen leaves.
