Ligustrum japonicum is a medium-sized, well-branching, bushy shrub. Does not usually grow much taller than 2 m in culture, but can grow more than 4 m high and wide in its natural habitat. The twigs and bark are unspectacular. An important difference from the somewhat similar L. japonicum, L. lucidum, is that the young shoots of L. japonicum are finely hairy, whereas in L. lucidum they are always bare. The shiny dark green leaves are always opposite each other. The leaves are thick and leathery. In July and August, panicles appear with small creamy-white flowers, which are well-flown by bees. The tree usually flowers profusely. Flowering is often followed by dull purple-black berries, often the berries are slightly curved or flattened.
L. japonicum is a very useful evergreen shrub that does well in parks, gardens and cemeteries. Its evergreen leaves tolerate cold, drying winds poorly in winter. Preferably plant the tree in a slightly sheltered, sunny spot.
