Liquidambar styraciflua 'Burgundy' resembles the species very closely but is distinguished by its exceptional purple-red to wine-red autumnal colour and by leaves that remain longer on the tree in the autumn. The crown starts off narrowly pyramidal with an ascending, vertical trunk. When the tree is older the branches grow out more widely so that the crown becomes broader. Height 20 - 25 m. Older branches develop thick grey corky wings. The 5-lobed (sometimes 7-lobed) leaves are deeply incised. Fruit capsules, that remain hanging in the tree for a long time, appear after the unremarkable flowering. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
