A big, multiple-stemmed tree with a loose, spreading crown and a smooth grey bark. The purple brown twigs have a thin layer of wax and have brown-purple buds. The obovate leaf is extremely large, 40 - 50 cm at a maximum and the topside is shiny and fresh green. The underside of the young leaf is light grey-green and slightly haired. In summer cream-white, bowl-shaped flowers appear that are more erect than M. hypoleuca. The cream-white petals are 10 - 12 cm long. The long stamen are purple at the base. The flowers emit a faint, slightly unpleasant odour and are followed by ovoid, purple-red fruits that are circa 10 cm. Inside the fruits there are carmine-red seeds. After years a magnificent solitary that requires quite some space.
