'Discovery' is a medium vigorous growing tree with a semi-open, flattened spherical crown and, like most other consumption apples, grows about 6-8 m high. As a tree, it is unfortunately susceptible to fruit tree canker. 'Discovery' is a typical summer apple. The apples can be picked from mid-August onwards. They are relatively small flattened round. The colour is red, sometimes on a yellow base or with a small yellow blush. The flesh is firm and white in colour. The flavour is pleasantly sweet to slightly acidic and not very aromatic. 'Discovery' is a distinct hand apple, keeping for about two to three weeks. Unsuitable for use in apple pie. This English apple variety was selected as a seedling in 1949 at Langham, Essex. Hardiness zone 6.
