Malus 'Veitch's Scarlet', sometimes considered a cultivar of Malus yunnanensis, is a small tree up to about 6 m tall. The tree has a slender growth habit and the crown will eventually grow half as wide as tall. The leaves are more or less heart-shaped with six or seven pairs of shallow lobes in the leaf margin and fairly deep veins.
In summer, the leaves are dark green, turning deep orange-red in autumn. From late April to around mid-May, the pink flower buds open. The flowers are scarlet, about 3.5 cm in size and arranged in clusters of sometimes as many as 20 flowers together. They are followed by relatively large (4.5 cm) egg-shaped ornamental apples. These are deep red to brownish-red and, in addition to the flowering and autumn colours, are an important ornamental feature of the tree.
