Large tree with a semi-closed conical crown, flattening out somewhat when mature. Moderately fast-growing, with horizontal branching. In its natural site, the tree can grow to approx. 50 m in height. The bark is blackish brown, later grooved with loose plates and turning purplish brown. When cut, the smooth twigs, glossy when mature, smell like oranges. The twisted needles are fairly stiff, erect and pointy. They are approx. 18 cm long, a striking greyish blue colour and grow in bundles of 3 together. Crushed needles have a characteristic petroleum odour. When fully ripe, the purplish brown cones fall off. Pinus jeffreyi is suited to any type of soil and adapts well. Although the tree grows on dry, rocky mountain slopes in its natural habitat, it thrives best on permeable, light and moisture-retentive soil.
