Particularly lovely species with an open crown. Especially striking thanks to its long, hanging needles. The crown has a broad, pyramidal shape at first, but later it spreads out very broadly with horizontally protruding branches. When growing freely on its own, the branches stay on the tree all the way down to the ground. In its natural habitat, the tree can grow to a height of 50 m, but it is usually smaller when cultivated. The trunk is smooth and dark grey at first, but later flaking off in plates. The blue frosted needles are bent, remarkably long and thin and hang straight down, particularly from young twigs. Young cones are upright, but later they hang down as well. They are 15 - 25 cm long and 3 - 5 cm thick. Young trees, in particular, require support in windy sites and are sensitive to frost. Tolerates dry conditions.
