At 20-25 m tall, 'Sannae' remains slightly lower than the species P. nigra, which can grow to over 30 m tall. The tree has a semi-open oval crown. The smooth bark is grey. Most striking feature of 'Sannae' is its red-brown leaves. Especially in spring, this is intense in colour. Later in summer, the triangular- to diamond-shaped leaves turn dark green, while the young growth shoots always have the characteristic red colour.
'Sannae', like the species P. nigra, is an easy tree that grows in any sufficiently moist soil. However, the tree does prefer calcareous soils. 'Sannae' tolerates road salt and sea breezes and can be used in industrial areas. Hardiness zone 4.
