A fast growing tree when young, with a spherical crown that becomes fairly broad and rounded at a later age. Height 30-45 m. The open crown is formed by ascending branches growing in whorls. The grey to yellowish-grey bark starts off smooth but flakes away in small platelets at a later stage. The olive-green twigs are angular. The dark green leaves are elongated to elongated ovoid with a silver-white to greyish-green underside. Bears flowers in the form of catkins. Suitable as a a solitary in public gardens and parks. Sensitive to rust but little sensitive to leaf spot disease. Sensitive to wind and very sensitive to sea wind. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
