Prunus avium 'Van' is a sweet cherry with a semi-open crown of 6-8 m in height. The crown is initially formed by strongly ascending main branches, but later becomes broadly ovoid and slightly irregular in shape. The tree flowers in March-April with white blossom. 'Van' is self-pollinating, which means that a tree of another cherry variety should not be nearby for acceptable fruit bearing. Nevertheless, the tree will produce more fruit after cross-pollination by another cherry variety. Preferably, 'Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche' or 'Kordia' is used for this purpose. The cherries of 'Van' are ready for picking around the beginning of July. The large fruits are shiny dark red, have firm flesh and taste very pleasantly sweet. They are excellent for direct consumption.
'Van' originated in Canada in 1944. Hardiness zone 6
