A tree with a variable manner of growth that usually develops a narrow, ovoid crown. Height approx. 15 - 20 m, width approx. 10 m. Old trees have a trunk that is dark grey, and sometimes practically black. Usually deeply grooved and sometimes flaking off in small bits. Young twigs start out slightly hairy but are soon bare. They turn greyish brown and sometimes have thorns. The leaves are very variable in shape. They are round, oval or elliptical and glossy dark green, the edges are sharply serrated. White flowers bloom profusely in late April. The flowers, approx. 4 cm in diameter, grow in bundles of 5 to 9 together. Edible, fairly tasteless pear-shaped fruits follow in the autumn. Demands neutral to calcareous soil and is resistant to dryness.
