Quercus velutina 'Albertsii' – Fagaceae

A cultivar of Q. velutina, resembling Q. rubra. Grows to be a tall tree with a good ascending trunk and a dark grey smooth bark. The bark is a remarkable orange-yellow. Young twigs are olive-green to brown, later reddish-brown and covered with felt-like hairs. The buds, up to 12 mm in size and covered with grey hairs, are remarkable. The leaves are elongated ovoid to obovate, deeply lobed and dark green. The lobes are serrated. The tough leaves are on long stalks and are very large: 30 - 35 cm long and 20 - 25 cm wide. This is a major difference with the species. When the wind blows the tree produces a “tinny” noise. The ovoid acorns are single or in pairs and are half enclosed by the cupule: the latter is covered with thin contiguous scales.
