Large shrub to small tree with spreading branches that overhang somewhat. The transparent crown is round and the trunk smooth and greyish-brown. S. vilmorinii attains a height and breadth of up to approx. 6 m. Older trunks become a little flaky. The twigs are greyish-brown and later turn reddish-brown. Young twigs are slightly hairy but quickly become bare. The imparipinnate, fern-like, dark green leaves consist of 19 - 25 elongated to elliptical leaflets and often have a somewhat winged stalk. In the autumn the leaves beautifully turn to deep dark red. The spherical fruits turn from deep carmine pink to almost white with a pink blush. This rowan is a beautiful tree with ornamental leaves and pretty fruit but is sensitive to bacterial fire blight.
