Very large shrub or medium-size to large tree with a broad ovoid to round crown. The young twigs are reddish brown, initially hairy, later turning dark purple and hairless to slightly scaling. The bark of older trees is grey and smooth. The large leaves are almost round with a strikingly pointed tip. They are dark green. The lower two leaves of each shoot are virtually opposite each other. The other leaves are spread along the twig. The leaf base is broad, hollow and encloses the bud. The flowers open in June and hang in long racemes. The individual flowers measure approx. 2 cm and are white with yellow stamens. They have a very strong, pleasant fragrance. The tree usually blossoms very abundantly making it very bee friendly. The flowers are followed by hard, ovoid, white to yellowish hairy drupes with a dark green calyx.
