'Belle de Nancy' is a large shrub with a round crown that grows 2-3 m tall. Only rarely does this cultivar grow into a small tree taller than 3 m. The young twigs have a striking reddish tinge. The old bark is grey-brown and flakes off slightly in small patches later in life. The broad ovoid leaves are relatively small and dark green in colour. The flower panicles are medium-sized and remarkably broad, about 11-18 cm long and 7-12 cm wide. The individual flowers are about 1.8 cm in size. The flower buds are reddish-purple. The opened flowers are light bluish-purple and double. They have a strong and pleasant fragrance. The flowers open in the first half of May.
Syringa vulgaris grows in any nutritious and humus-rich soil. The plant prefers neutral to calcareous soil. 'Belle de Nancy' is very suitable for use in parks and gardens.
