'Maximowicz' is a large shrub to small tree with a broad oval to round crown that eventually grows 4-6 m tall and wide. The young twigs are slightly purplish-red tinged. The old bark is grey-brown and flakes off slightly in small patches later in life. The ovoid leaves are dark green in colour. The flower panicles are long and comparatively narrow. The individual flowers are quite large. The flower buds are violet-purple. The opened flowers are also violet-purple. They are semi-filled to fully filled, but single flowers are also formed. The corolla lobes are often curved or slightly twisted. The outside of the flowers is lighter, creating a somewhat bicoloured effect. The flowers open around late April and early May and have a strong and pleasant fragrance.
Syringa vulgaris grows in any nutritious and humus-rich soil. The plant prefers neutral to calcareous soil. 'Maximowicz' is very suitable for use in parks and gardens. Contrary to what the name suggests, this cultivar was introduced in 1901 by Victor Lemoine & Fils in Nancy, France. Hardiness zone 4.
