Elm with strong ascending growth, at first columnar but later oval. Forms a clear main trunk. The tree has a dense crown which forks easily. The young tree has a trunk that is smooth and silver-grey: later it develops black grooves. Old trunks have a network of grooves. Young twigs are brown, slightly hairy and have lenticels. Later they become bare and greyish-brown. The leaves are larger than those of 'Lobel' and they turn yellow in the autumn. Is very resistant to (sea) wind and shows good resistance to disease. Studies have shown that 'Clusius' is reasonably resistant to Dutch elm disease. This elm is suitable for urban areas as also at sites where there is a great deal of wind.
