Wisteria sinensis is an imposing climbing plant that reaches between 10 m and 25 m in height. In the wild, the plant can reach 30 m in height. W. sinensis can also be grown as a small tree with capriciously flattened crown, but will then always need the support of a pole because the crown becomes too heavy for the trunk. The twigs of W. sinensis always wind "counterclockwise" as seen from above. From the side, the twigs grow from the bottom left to the top right around a stick or pole. The odd-pinnate leaves are mid-green and consist of 9-13 partial leaves. Just before the leaves emerge, the light blue-violet flowers open in dense, hanging clusters. The clusters can grow up to 40 cm long and flowering continues during leaf unfurling. The young unfurling leaves are bronze-coloured, which makes an attractive combination with the flower colour. After flowering, large, felty-haired green pods can form.
W. sinensis is a strong-growing climber that, if space is limited, needs regular companion pruning. If pruning takes place after the flowers have finished flowering, it will not be at the expense of flowering. W. sinensis will grow in any soil, provided it is sufficiently nutritious. Although it prefers to grow in sun or semi-shade, the soil should not be allowed to dry out for long periods.
