Medium-size tree that at first sight resembles Z. carpinifolia, but is significantly smaller. The wide vase-shaped crown grows to 6 - 12 m height and spread. The branching is less ascending but naturally starts quite low. The young twigs are quite thin, brown and slightly hairy. The mature bark is grey rarely exfoliates in small plates. The slightly crooked, ovate to elliptical leaf is dark green and has the same hair as Z. carpinifolia. The leaf margin, however is significantly more deeply serrated. The blossom, fruits and autumn colour are as the species. A medium-size park tree with a graceful crown shape that was originally described as a separate species but is now assumed to be a selection of Z. carpinifolia. Material gathered from the wild has never been kept which means this is not likely to be a wild species.
