Unlike the species, ‘Fastigiata’ is a medium-size to large tree with a columnar crown which retains its shape when mature. The tree can grow to 15 m but in practice usually reaches approx. 10 to 12 m tall. The young twigs are reddish brown to brown-grey and bare. The old bark is grey and scaling to reveal orange bast. The ovoid to elongated leaf is light to dark green. The top is long and tapers to a point and the leaf margin has single teeth tapering to a point. In autumn the leaf turns bronze-red. The inconspicuous green flowers are followed by small bean-like fruits. ‘Fastigiata’ is an ancient cultivar of unidentified origin which has been unknown for a long time. Its narrow crown makes this tree suitable for avenues and streets.
