Medium-size tree up to approx. 15 m height with regular, broad, pyramidal crown. The bright green, 5-lobed leaves are fairly small and less deeply dissected than with A. saccharinum. They have red stems and a greyish underside. In autumn it turns deep orange-red to intense red. The autumn colour persists quite a long time before the leaf falls. Like all A. x freemanii, ‘Jeffersred’ flourishes on most soils as long as they are not too limy. Although the plant is female, fruits rarely form. The tree was discovered at the end of the 1960s by Glenn Jeffers of the eponymous nursery, but only named in 1980.
