Large, vigorously growing tree with a wide conical crown. It can reach a height of 20 to 25 m. The 5-lobed, nicely coloured leaf has a dark green surface and a red-purple underside. Because of its dark colour, preferably applied on a light site. Flowers are of the species. The wings of the winged nutlets have a light pink hue. 'Atropupureum' is applied as a park tree, avenue tree or a solitary in the city and on industrial estates. As the tree is sea wind resistant, it is also planted along the coast. The tree does not require much from the soil and is not sensitive to strong winds. Winter hardiness zone: 4
