Medium-size tree with a regular, ovoid crown, forming a fairly broad and drooping ovoid when mature. The tree was selected during a study into the heredity of autumn colours and resistance to leafhoppers. ‘Brandywine’ has splendid autumn colours. Over about two weeks, the leaf first turns red and then a deep purplish red. Due to its fairly narrow habit, ‘Brandywine’ is suitable for use as a street tree, even in more restricted spaces. Furthermore, the tree is male, so it will not spread by seeding. Its growth will stagnate on calcareous soil. In such soil, as with very dry soil, the autumn change of colour will be less noticeable. Intolerant to (sea) wind.
