Slow growing bush that eventually grows into a small tree with a very short trunk and a bulbous crown. The leaves are virtually round and have 9 to 11 shallow lobes. On emerging, the leaf is golden yellow, becoming more greenish-yellow in summer. The autumn colour is orange, but most leaves will wither or turn brown at an early stage. This maple was cultivated for a long time as A. japonicum ‘Aureum’. Research demonstrated that the flower corymbs and fruit of ‘Aureum’ point upward, a characteristic of A. shirasawanum and not of A. japonicum.
