Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple' is a crossing between F. sylvatica 'Dawyck' and a red-leaved beech. It has a narrow, columnar crown and can attain a height of 25 m and a spread of 3 m. The oval to ovate leaves are deep purplish and 4 - 10 cm. As this cultivar is grafted, it retains its colour and habit well. Inflorescence is inconspicuous. In autumn the small nuts appear. Solitary preferring a well-drained, not too wet soil that is rich in humus content. Moderate wind resistance. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
