'Blue Opal' is a vigorous but somewhat erratic upright growing tree growing 4-6 m tall. Its brownish-grey twigs and smooth grey bark are unremarkable. The leaves, like those of the species M. acuminata, are large and shiny bright green. At the same time as the leaves unfurl, the flowers appear. These are, for a Magnolia, not very large. But the colour is special. The outer petals are blue-green and light grey-blue frosted. The inner petals, which become visible as the flowers open further, are pale yellow. In the search for blue-flowering Magnolia, 'Blue Opal' was the first introduction.
Grows, like M. acuminata, in any sufficiently permeable soil. The roots of this Magnolia are also fleshy and do not tolerate standing water around the roots. It is a sun lover and prefers a warm, sunny spot. Hardiness zone 5.
