'Melrose' is a medium-sized apple tree that grows moderately fast. The semi-open, vase-shaped crown grows 6-8 m tall. Later in life, the crown sags a little and becomes rounder. The flower buds are pink and the flowers, which are pale pink to whitish-pink, flowers open in April. Apples can be picked from the beginning of September. The apples are broad oval and medium-sized to quite large. The colour is pinkish red to dark red on a pale yellow background. The creamy white flesh is crisp and juicy and has a strong and pleasantly fresh sweet-sour smell. The flavour is also fresh sweet and sour. Although the apples store well, it is primarily a hand apple, not recommended for processing into purée or juice and in pastries or salads.
'Melrose' is a Scottish cultivar found at Melrose Abbey in 1831. Hardiness zone 6.
