Slow growing small tree with heavy main branches and irregular, flat-topped, spherical crown to approx. 6 m tall. The young twigs are grey and woolly whereas the mature bark is light grey and smooth. The elongated to obovate leaf is very finely serrated with soft hairs, especially when young. In autumn it turns reddish brown to deep golden yellow. The brown, hard fruits have strikingly large calyx valves and are only edible when rotting. Often after the first night frost. The fruits of ‘Westerveld’ are a little larger than the species and this breed is guaranteed to bear a large annual crop. In around 1975 it was included and named by Westerveld tree nursery in the NAKB (Netherlands Inspection Service for Horticulture) inspection. Deep rooting tree. Tolerates limy soils, is very hardy and heat resistant.
