Grows to approx. 30 m in its original habitat but in Europe only to approx. 15 m. The crown is round: like the heavy main branches the trunk is rough and dark grey, later with deep grooves. The thick twigs, hairy at first but later bare, are a remarkable feature. The leaves are remarkably large, 15 - 30 cm long – even up to 50 cm on young shoots. Width 9 - 14 cm: young leaves up to 30 cm. The edge is shallow-lobed to undulating. The upper side is matt dark green, the underside lighter green with velvety hairs. Young leaves are completely covered with hairs. The acorns are in small bundles, are 2 cm in size and half enclosed by the cupule. The cupules are covered with long narrow scales that project or are bent backwards. The tree bears fruit from a young age.
