This small tree has an open crown with sturdy ascending branches. It does not form a central trunk, making the crown ovoid. The young twigs are bare and glossy reddish-brown. The imparipinnate leaves consist of 11 - 17 leaflets, lanceolate to elongated, and the stipules remain on the tree for a long time. The leaf edge is serrated except at the foot where it is smooth. S. discolor has dark green leaves that are bluish-green on the underside. In the autumn the leaves turn an intense red. The flowers are in loose stemmed umbels, somewhat hairy, with many white flowers grouped together. The fruits appear in late summer. They are almost white to creamy yellow and sometimes have a pale pink blush. With their pale colour the fruits contrast well with the autumn shades of the leaves. A type much to be recommended.
