This is a very remarkable hybrid, origin unknown. The tree grows narrowly pyramidal to a height of approx. 8 m and is very compact. The leaves, up to approx. 16 cm in size, are imparipinnate and consist of 15 - 19 narrow obovate leaflets. In the autumn they turn red-orange to purple and, together with the remarkable fruits, constitute the major ornamental factor. At first the fruits are creamy yellow but later turn dark yellow to amber. 'Joseph Rock' is very inconsistent in the amount of fruit it bears. But the fruit stays on the tree for a long time, sometimes until mid-December, and contrasts well with the leaves' autumn colours. Unfortunately this handsome tree is sensitive to bacterial fire blight.
