Robust and fast growing tree with a broad, pyramidal, remarkably symmetrical crown. The trunk is grey and smooth and the young twigs are glossy reddish-brown and bear white hairs. Later they become bare. The broad ovoid to almost round and sturdy leathery leaves are glossy dark green. On the underside they are felt-like and yellowish-grey. The young emerging leaves also bear white felt-like hairs. The shallow-lobed leaf edge is serrated. In late May the umbels of creamy white flowers appear. In the late summer the (brownish-) red to orange-yellow berries emerge. S. latifolia bears an exceptionally abundant amount of fruit. The tree is very useful in industrial areas and stands up well to hard surfaces.
