The old cultivar 'Rubra' is a slow-growing tree with a broad, conical crown and an approx. height of 15 m. Upwards-slanting branches grow on the light grey, later grooved trunk. In the winter, the twigs turn orange-red to coral red. The leaves are round to ovoid with a tapered top and a slanted heart-shaped base. The leaf edge is sharply serrated. When the leaves first emerge they have a red tint but later they turn dark green. The underside remains softly hairy. The aromatic flowers grow in pendulous umbels of 3 to 5 together.
