Sturdy tree with a heavy straight trunk. The trunk of young trees grows perfectly straight to the top, with sturdy, ascending branching. Later, a few straightly ascending trunk branches develop, broadening out the tree. Young twigs are greenish grey and have felt-like hair but are soon bare and green. The leaves are more or less round, dark matt green with a remarkably thick white felty underside. The top of the leaf tapers to a short point, the base is heart-shaped. The leaf edge is sharply serrated. In the autumn the leaves turn yellow. They remain on the tree for a long time. In July, pendulous umbels of strongly aromatic flowers appear. The short-stemmed bract is approx. 5 cm long. T. tomentosa was often used as a city tree, but now there are other cultivars with a more regular manner of growth. Thanks to its felt-like leaves, it is fairly unsusceptible to aphids.
